Green Hosting
There's been a lot of talk lately about being greener, and lets face it a lot of people are cashing in on this "green revolution" that is supposedly happening. Big business see it as yet another way of parting us from our pennies, another little trick to make us buy more things we don't need. That is not what we are going here. We have been conscientiously lowering our own impact on the environment for years, it is something we believe strongly in. The simple fact is that if we don't all do our bit now, we don't really have much of a future on this mostly blue and green planet.
There are several environmental considerations relating to the hosting of a website. Firstly there is the server itself that hosts the site – it must be left of all day and night. It's not just the server itself though, there are other pieces of equipment related to your hosting such as a Uninterruptible power supply which means that if there is a power cut then the servers still stay online. And of course, there are staff that look after the servers, the need heat and lighting and they probably drive to work. Of course, if your website is hosted on a shared server, the environmental costs are shared between all of the sites on that server. Next there is the computer that is being used to view the site. Busy sites may have many visitors at any one time. After looking into it a bit more thoroughly, it is easy to see how hosting, and indeed many activities make an environmental impact.
It's not all doom and gloom though because just by making simple decisions like choosing a greener hosting company over a high pollution one you are already making a big difference. Of course it doesn't stop there and there are loads of other ways you can reduce your impact on the environment including reducing your carbon footprint. For every hosting package purchased though this site we will offset 0.3 tonnes of CO2 using various proven offsetting programmes.
